TFT Set 18 Eclipse Guide: How Solar and Lunar Work and the Best Eclipse Comp
Eclipse is the strangest trait in Enchanted Wilds. It has no champions of its own, and no emblem gives it. Once it's on, it kills an enemy every few seconds, no matter how much health or armor that enemy has.
You get there through two other traits, @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Solar@ and @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Lunar@. This guide covers how both of them work, what Eclipse does, and how to play the reroll comp that turns it on.
Quick answer. Field 3 Solar and 3 Lunar champions and you get Eclipse. After 8 seconds of combat it kills the lowest health enemy, then does it again every 3.5 seconds. The usual way to get there is a level 6 reroll. 3-star @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Leona@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kayle@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Sejuani@ for Solar, then add @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Diana@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Aphelios@ for Lunar. A @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemLunar@ gives you the third Lunar. Build tanky. The longer the fight lasts, the more Eclipse kills.
How does Eclipse work in TFT?
Eclipse turns on when you have 3 Solar and 3 Lunar champions on the board at the same time. It isn't a trait you can put on a champion, and no emblem gives it.
Once it's active, @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Eclipse@ waits 8 seconds into combat and then kills the enemy with the lowest health. It repeats every 3.5 seconds after that. It doesn't deal damage. It just removes the unit.
Over one fight, that's one enemy gone at 8 seconds, two at 11.5, three at 15, four at 18.5 and five at 22.
That timeline explains the whole comp. Eclipse does nothing for the first 8 seconds, and a board that dies in 7 seconds never sees it. A board that survives 20 seconds takes out half the enemy team without dealing a point of damage. Every decision in an Eclipse comp comes back to staying alive long enough.
It also targets the lowest health enemy, not the weakest one. Your own damage pushes enemies into range, so Eclipse ends up finishing off whatever your carries have already hit.
How Solar works
Solar has a single breakpoint at 3. There are four Solar champions:
Champion | Cost | Other trait |
|---|---|---|
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Leona@ | 1 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Defender@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kayle@ | 2 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Rapidfire@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Sejuani@ | 2 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_Juggernaut18@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Lux_Sunbeam@ | 5 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_LuxUniqueTrait@ |
With 3 Solar, your whole team gets a shield worth 5% of max health and deals 8% bonus magic damage. The interesting part is what comes after that. Solar gets stronger for every unique 3-star champion on your board, whatever its traits are:
Every unique 3-star adds 1% to the shield and to the bonus magic damage.
3 unique 3-stars add 15% Attack Speed and 12 Armor and Magic Resist.
5 unique 3-stars turn 40% of the bonus magic damage into true damage.
7 unique 3-stars ascend one of your 3-star champions to 4-star every 4 seconds of combat.
"Unique" is the key word. Two 3-star Leonas count once. This is why Solar comps reroll so many different cheap units. Leona, Kayle, Sejuani, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Shen@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Varus@ are all 1 or 2 cost, and each one you 3-star moves Solar up a step.
The 7 bonus pairs well with Kayle. Her ability gets a new stage at each star level, and at 4-star she gets infinite range.
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Lux_Sunbeam@ deals 15% bonus damage plus 12% more for each unique 3-star you field. With five 3-stars that's 75% bonus damage on her laser.
How Lunar works
Lunar has breakpoints at 2, 3, 4 and 5. Lunar champions and every ally next to them gain Attack Speed and Ability Power, and Lunar champions get double. The bonus grows at each breakpoint.
Champion | Cost | Other traits |
|---|---|---|
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Diana@ | 3 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Slayer@, @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Vanguard@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Aphelios@ | 4 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Rapidfire@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Alune@ | 5 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_Spellweaver@, @tft=set18:trait:DA_AluneUniqueTrait18@ |
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Lux_Moonbeam@ | 5 | @tft=set18:trait:DA_18_LuxUniqueTrait@ |
The "adjacent allies" part changes how you position. A Lunar champion next to your carry gives that carry Attack Speed and Ability Power too. Put Diana next to your frontline and Aphelios next to Kayle, and the buff reaches twice as many units.
@tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Lux_Moonbeam@ applies 8% Vulnerable to every enemy her laser hits.
Getting the third Lunar is the hard part of Eclipse. Diana and Aphelios are easy, but the other two Lunar champions cost 5. A @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemLunar@ solves it earlier. There is no Solar Emblem, but you don't need one, because Solar's three cheap champions are easy to find.
The Solar Lunar reroll comp
This is the standard way to turn Eclipse on. You slow roll at level 6 for 3-star Solar units, then level up for the Lunar side.
Role | Champions |
|---|---|
3-star reroll targets | @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Leona@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kayle@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Sejuani@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Shen@ |
Lunar | @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Diana@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Aphelios@, plus a @tft=set18:item:DA_18_EmblemLunar@ |
Main carries | @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Aphelios@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kayle@ |
Tanks | @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Sejuani@ and @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Shen@ |
Final board | @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Leona@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Kayle@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Sejuani@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Shen@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Varus@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Diana@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Aphelios@, @tft=set18:unit:DA_Amumu18@ |
Diana and Aphelios are only 2 Lunar, so the emblem is what turns Eclipse on. On top of Solar, Lunar and Eclipse, the final board runs 3 Rapidfire with Kayle, Aphelios and Varus, and 3 Inferno with Shen, Varus and Amumu. Leona and Shen give 2 Defender, and Sejuani and Amumu give 2 Juggernaut.
Leveling plan
Level to 4 at 2-1 and to 5 at 2-5, and save gold the whole time.
Go to level 6 at 3-2. Slow roll above 50 gold for 3-star Kayle, Sejuani, Leona and Shen.
Stay on 6 through stage 4 and finish your 3-stars there.
Go to level 7 at 5-1 to add Diana, Aphelios and Amumu.
The 3-stars come first. Five unique 3-stars turn on Solar's true damage, and that does more for this comp than any single 4 or 5 cost champion.
Items
Aphelios: @tft=set18:item:DA_GuinsoosRageblade@, @tft=set18:item:DA_InfinityEdge@, @tft=set18:item:DA_LastWhisper@. Kayle holds them until Aphelios shows up.
Kayle: @tft=set18:item:DA_GuinsoosRageblade@, @tft=set18:item:DA_JeweledGauntlet@, @tft=set18:item:DA_RabadonsDeathcap@.
Sejuani: @tft=set18:item:DA_GargoyleStoneplate@, @tft=set18:item:DA_SpiritVisage@, @tft=set18:item:DA_WarmogsArmor@. Leona holds them early.
Shen: the same tank items as Sejuani if you have spares.
A Guinsoo's Rageblade in your opener and an early 2-star Aphelios are good signs to commit.
Flex options
If you find @tft=set18:unit:DA_18_Alune@ but no Lunar Emblem, play him over Varus. He's your third Lunar, so Eclipse stays on without the emblem. You drop to 2 Rapidfire and 2 Inferno, which both still count as active.
Amumu is the unit you can play without for a while. The board still works with 7 units, but it drops to 2 Inferno and loses Juggernaut, so add him as soon as he shows up.
Augments for Solar and Lunar
@tft=set18:augment:DA_18_SolarTraitAugment@ gives you Leona, Kayle and Sejuani right away. Leona also gains 70 permanent max health each round, plus 10 more for each unique 3-star you field. It's a Silver augment since patch 18.4, and it's the best start this comp can get.
@tft=set18:augment:DA_18_LunarTraitAugment@ and @tft=set18:augment:DA_18_LunarTraitAugmentPlus@ give your Lunar champions 100 health and 8% Damage Amp for each unique Solar champion on the board. With Leona, Kayle and Sejuani that's 300 health and 24% Damage Amp on every Lunar champion, including your emblem holder. Both come with Leona and Kayle. The regular version adds Diana, and the plus version adds Aphelios instead.
@tft=set18:augment:DA_URF@ gives you a Spatula. Combine it with a Tear of the Goddess and you have the Lunar Emblem this comp needs.
Wisps for Solar and Lunar
Four Wisps work especially well here:
@tft=set18:wisp:TFT18_Wisp_RefreshingLight@ gives a free reroll for every star level of each unique Solar champion. It costs 6 gold. With 3-star Leona, Kayle and Sejuani that's 9 free rerolls, worth 18 gold. With all three at 2-star it's still 6 rerolls, worth 12 gold.
@tft=set18:wisp:TFT18_Wisp_SolarGift@ costs 6 gold and gives you a Leona, a Sejuani and a Kayle. Those three cost 5 gold in the shop, so you pay 1 gold extra to skip finding them. On a reroll comp that's usually worth it.
@tft=set18:wisp:TFT18_Wisp_Moonrise@ doubles Lunar's bonus after 8 seconds, the same moment Eclipse starts.
@tft=set18:wisp:TFT18_Wisp_MoonlightRitual@ costs 2 gold and stars up your lowest star 1 or 2 cost champion during combat. It only shows up once you have a 2-star 1 or 2 cost champion.
Every Wisp and its cost is on our Set 18 Wisps list.
Common Eclipse mistakes
Building damage instead of survival. Eclipse does nothing for 8 seconds. A board that dies at 7 seconds has turned off half its comp.
Counting two copies of the same 3-star. Solar counts unique 3-stars. A second 3-star Leona adds nothing to Solar.
Leveling before your 3-stars are done. Five unique 3-stars matter more than reaching level 8 early.
Leaving Lunar units in a corner. Lunar also buffs allies next to it, so place Diana and Aphelios where they touch the most units.
Forcing Alune. If your third Lunar won't show up, a Lunar Emblem or Lunar Lux does the same job.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get Eclipse in TFT?
Field 3 Solar and 3 Lunar champions at the same time. Eclipse turns on by itself, with no emblem or extra unit needed.
What does Eclipse do?
After 8 seconds of combat, Eclipse kills the lowest health enemy. It repeats every 3.5 seconds for the rest of the fight.
Which champions are Solar and Lunar?
Solar is Leona, Kayle, Sejuani and Solar Lux. Lunar is Diana, Aphelios, Alune and Lunar Lux.
Do 3-stars of any trait count for Solar?
Yes. Solar counts every unique 3-star champion on your board, whether it's Solar or not. That's why Solar comps reroll cheap units like Shen and Varus.
Is there a Solar Emblem?
No, only a Lunar Emblem. Solar only needs 3 champions, and all three of the cheap ones cost 1 or 2.
Where can I see the full Eclipse comp?
The full board and items are in the Solar Lunar reroll section above. Every current comp's board, item builds and stats are on our comps tier list.
